The Stupid-left is gonna win this for Trump.

Between #defundpolice to cheering on the random vandalism against monuments and statues, the stupid-left is doing Trump’s work for him.

I’m not kidding either.

#defundpolice

I understood the #defundpolice ‘movement’ as a cry for help. A demand to rethink policing; in fact, several pundits have described this out well and its not an unreasonable idea to hold. But I’ll be yelled at by some who’ve driven off the ideas cliff that “no, we need to shut down all police departments…no police at all.”

That’s a non starter with me. And its not that I side with police who engage in violent behavior – I don’t. Every officer needs to he held accountable for their actions, including their superiors who enable them and the public officials (politicians) who set the narrative.

Policing, in places, is sick and it needs help. The cure is going to suck for sure, but if we’re to continue to be a society of (fair) rules and laws, then dramatic reform is necessary. Even Camden New Jersey, who abolished their police force, has a police force. Reformed and restructured.

If I had my wits about me, I’d be arguing that the notion of ‘defund the police’ is the workings of far right dark arts specialists. Because defunding something in the public realm (which only needs reforms) is uniquely conservative.

Vandalism

First, we do not place statues that honour white supremacists and Nazi’s. That’s why you don’t find them in post war Germany. Oddly, you find them in the deep south of America. Great, towering monuments to revered Confederate Generals who fought the lost cause against the northern invaders. Oh wait, it was the south that split from the north because they sought to protect the state’s right to maintain slavery.

Germany was smart that way. Once the war was over and began to reconstruct their democracy, they outlawed any Nazi symbols, flags, etc. Not to erase the past, but so that it doesn’t get glorified. Learning about the genocide of Adolph Hitler and his Nazi regime is required learning by school kids so that they fully understand what tyranny looks like. Nothing is sugar coated.

The old confederacy however got its losing story retold and a complicit nation did nothing about it. For the better part of a century past the end of the US Civil War, political pressure made it possible that southern leaders got to re-tell the story. That it was the War of Northern Aggression, not the reunification war that it was intended. In all fairness, President Lincoln stated that he would have reunited the country with or without slavery; it wasn’t until later in the war that he found his abolitionist salvation that he is remembered for.

The statues to General Lee and ‘President’ Jefferson Davis are as offensive to African-Americans as one to Adolph Hitler would be to a German; or any reasonable minded person. But I am not in favour of the archaic vandalism used to bring them down.

Yes, the monuments that lionize Confederates and their ’cause’ should come down and appropriately placed in museums that give proper context and unvarnished facts about the inhuman slavery cause they were fighting to defend; akin to modern venues where the history of the Third Reich are told.

What folks are seeing is an angry mob move into a town square; vandalize and rip down a statue. This is political manna from heaven for Donald Trump. He’s looking to secure a coalition of voters to give him a second term and the stupid-left is doing his work for him. He needs voters from a moderate to conservative voter position to see the alternative as unacceptable. Its working.

Yes the monuments need to come down. But it needs to be part of the re-education process. The affected states and towns need to solicit ideas to what should replace these icons of hate; get citizens involved – as opposed to seeing a mob smash shit.

These once-revered characters sought to preserve the crimes of human slavery and get no honour from us anymore. Sites should be re-dedicated to those who fought against slavery, those who died because of slavery. Confederates were the enemy and they lost. End of story.

Peaceful protests

By no means am I trying to undermine #blacklivesmatter. Or those calling for major police reforms now. I agree. I support your right to be out, be loud, but not to throw punches, rocks, bottles or otherwise. Both the American and Canadian constitution protect your right to peacefully assemble; but the key is peaceful. To be sure, most are. So don’t give in to the tiny handful of violent saboteurs or you’ll make yourself the unwitting stars in very effective Donald Trump ads.

The Greens stunning coup in grabbing former provincial New Brunswick NDP candidates turns to a lemon.

Read the story: here

You’re a party member that discovers that some voters are racist. Do you defend your leader against this intolerance? Or leave the party because you don’t want to be identified with that turban wearing leader.

Today we found out.

The Greens, already stung by their party leader’s gross misfire in the “corporate restorative justice” stunt where Elizabeth May seemingly flings aside reconciliation and UNDRIP by proposing SNC Lavalin be given a no-bid P3 to rebuild water systems on reserve lands, now appears to be the home of political activists who are uncomfortable with a brown skinned dude with a funny name.

Elizabeth May presumably signed off on this plan, was she aware that some former NDP candidates were not comfortable with the brown guy with the Sikh faith? Jagmeet Singh? She should have told them to fuck off. We don’t want your racial intolerance either.

This is the sort of thing I would have expected from the PPC. This would have made sense. From the PPC. Greens?! Remember when they were pretending to be progressive?

No. The Greens are not progressive. This is a move unfit for a party seeking office who wants to hold the balance of power.

Sure, good catch, Green Party. Thanks for taking out trash.

Now wear it like the cynical opportunists you have become.

Everyone calm the fuck down

The NDP is not going through some existential crisis, the political ground that’s moving is on the right and far right; and this is not a playground the NDP should dabble in. Ever.

Its worth reminding folks that Saint Jack Layton was a relative centrist in his overall philosophy; this is why he appealed to so many independents and made it possible to draft folks like Thomas Mulcair. It was Jack Layton who made a pitch to the “progressives” of the (then) freshly disemboweled PC party to come aboard. If you’re keeping up, that means appealing to folks like Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell, or “red tories”.

The left of the NDP didn’t protest much as they saw the electoral success of opening that tent further and it shocked the federal Liberals to see Jack Layton eat their lunch.

So when I hear folks complain that the NDP isn’t left enough, remember that this is how we ended up with our little putsch that dumped Mulcair after his inaugural election that saw the NDP with its second best showing ever. We weren’t left enough. So we picked Jagmeet Singh.

There is some racism that’s alive and well in Canada who won’t vote for the brown man, but then those folks aren’t the type I want my party appealing to anyway. Go vote PPC since that’s more appropriate to your hateful thinking.

But in changing from the relative centrist Mulcair in favour of Jagmeet Singh, we got a left wing party whose platform is the most progressive I’ve seen in a generation. It has a green new deal and a tax on the 1%.

Oh yes, some will say it’s not enough, and some will say it goes to far. Thing is, it’s the Greens that are saying the NDP plan doesn’t go far enough and the Liberals saying it goes to far.

Wonderful! If radical Greens say your plan isn’t radical enough and do-nothing Liberals say it goes too far, then we’re probably exactly where we need to be.

As long as the NDP doesn’t fumble around in the bigoted anti immigrant tropes that the PPC/CPC are mired into, there’s plenty of room to expand the reach of the NDP.

Liberals have revealed themselves again as the party that will say anything to get elected, while doing as few possible progressive things except as necessary to stay in office.

We’re done with this.

The neoliberal economic philosophy is how we got here. The major gaps in rich and poor, the crushing of unions, the disregard towards the environment and climate change; it’s all related. None of the other party’s are prepared to tackle the system. The NDP will.

So stop your navel gazing. Let the reactionary radicals in the Greens and PPC light their hair on fire, let the Liberals and Conservatives engage in platitudes and dithering, the NDP just needs to plow forward. We’re on the right path.

Up is down and those protesting against the pending rise of a new fascism are the real enemy.

Everyone should be opposed to fascism.

I saw on my TV the white supremacist “protests” at Charlottesville from a year ago and the news of the woman their movement murdered in protesting these neo-nazis, but today I learned that this woman and the uppity protesters she was part of are the real enemy.

No seriously, that’s what opinion piece the National Post published today.

Look. In the normal discourse in politics, the normal left right and centre have this perpetual debate on issues of importance.

But it must never be ok or normalized that a group be protesting under the Nazi banner using phrases like “Jews will not replace us” and “blood and soil” (taken directly from 1930’s Germany).

Nobody should be ok with this. All rational left, right and centre thinking folks have to be united here. In fact, it was a failure of the rational majority to unite that saw Hitler rise to power.

Sure, opinions are constitutionally protected, especially ones published in news papers and related outlets. But it doesn’t make the article any less stupid.

Or wrong.
